It was my turn and I did not see that white's bishop could take my rook. I moved my other rook instead so of course I lost my rook. I cheered myself up profiteroles!
@syrup I find playing the anonymous games are good for practicing the basics. So I am improving being a fundamentally sound player. You are right though in that anonymous games provide opponents of varying strength. If I want to get an equal opponent, I have to log in and search by rating.
@FriedClams is that part of the appeal for you - you have no idea what skill level you're up against? It's not even like you can remotely judge a book by its cover like in an IRL setting - online you have NOTHING to go by except maybe a few starting moves? And even then they could be trying to fool you / set you up? I kind of like the sound of that.

When I log in, the stronger players will not play with me which makes sense since they will easily win. This way I can see how people breakdown my strategies and I can go over where I went wrong. I lost my most recent game real easily and had a chance to review it which helped me learn.

Do you find you're getting much better? Or does the level of opponent vary so wildly that it's a bit random how well you do?
